It was on the shores of what is now Port Royal Plantation that Captain William Hilton landed in 1663, leading to the first British settlement of the island. Port Royal Plantation is also the site of historic Fort Walker, a station for Confederate troops during the Civil War. Port Royal Plantation is now best known for its peaceful, preserved natural environment and plentiful amenities. Hilton Head's beautiful beaches begin at the north end of Port Royal Plantation and run to the south end of Sea Pines Plantation. The plantation is the island's only completely private seaside residential neighborhood with no rentals allowed. Port Royal Plantation offers three 18 hole golf courses, a "Southern style" clubhouse and pro shop, two championship croquet courts, and a 16 court tennis and racquet club. Port Royal residents enjoy a Beach Club which features a swimming pool, playground, and a clubhouse which can be reserved for social events. Homes at Port Royal Plantation enjoy views of golf, lagoon, or the ocean. Outside but adjacent to Port Royal Plantation is the oceanfront Westin Resort.
